Annual
PGCSA
Championship at the Cardinal Golf &
Country Club

Make sure to come
out to the Annual Championship at the Cardinal Golf &
Country Club for your chance to take home
some hardware!
Dear Members
of the PGCSA . . .
Just a
brief note of thanks to the officers and membership of the Piedmont
GCSA for their generous support of the Wee One Charity Golf Event Benefiting
Eric Voss held September 8th at Meadowlands Golf Club. The demonstration
of support from both within and outside the industry was truly exceptional
as over $18,000 was raised to help Eric and his family meet their expenses
during his lengthy rehabilitation. Moreover, the Wee One Foundation
has provided an additional matching gift of $10,000 to further assist
Eric. I am very pleased to report that Eric's condition is improving
steadily as he has just returned home to Kernersville.
For those
that may not know, the Wee One Foundation was founded a few years ago
by friends of Wayne Otto, CGCS who passed away in 2004 of pancreatic
cancer. For anyone that knew Wayne it is a fitting tribute to a guy
that loved the game and the industry and all those people he met along
the way. I would encourage everyone to visit their website at www.weeone.org
and consider becoming a member.

Piedmont Press
I
hope that everyone has been enjoying the nice dry beginning of spring
that we are experiencing. Hopefully, with any luck, we can dodge these
rainy days this year on our meeting days. The Association's schedule will
have some exciting golf events beginning next month. I hope that everyone
took time to mark your calendars with our events this year and plan to
attend as many of them as possible.
The Board has been busy working on the details for the events this year
and we have some exciting news about our speaker at the Annual Championship.
We are fortunate to have Dr. Leon Lucas, agronomist for the Carolinas
Golf Association, give the attendees a presentation on May 18th at the
Cardinal Golf & Country Club. He will discuss disease, weed control,
and other topics that his travels through the Carolinas have given him
knowledge to pass along to members of the PGCSA. Dr. Lucas' presentation
will begin at 10:00 with lunch to follow and a shotgun start at around
12:30. Please make sure to take this opportunity to see what a magnificent
job Pete Dye did with the recent renovation at the Cardinal.
The Cup Match with the Sandhills is on June 2nd at Tot Hill Farm and they
have been gracious enough to allow us a primetime start with a 10:00 shotgun
start and lunch to follow. We need to make sure we bring the cup back
to the Piedmont this year. We have confirmed the date for the Assistant's
Championship at Sedgefield CC. It will be held on June 22nd so make sure
that all our assistants in the Piedmont have a chance to come out and
network with their peers. This is a great opportunity for them to get
in a round of golf away from their perspective clubs before they have
to start battling Mother Nature and her evil doings to bentgrass. Our
night out with the Greensboro Grasshoppers is taking place on July 9th.
Please mark this on your calendar because it is a good opportunity to
catch up with everyone and best of all there is no cost to you due to
the support of our sponsor, Syngenta.
The Educational Meeting was a big success and I believe that everyone
truly enjoyed listening to Pat O'Brien and his many sidebars! He brought
up some interesting points about grassing selections and how the right
grass in the right area can save time and money and that is surely something
that we are all thinking about this year. On the subject of money, he
gave the attendees some different ideas that have allowed other superintendents
around the country to save countless dollars and get more "time"
out of their employees' day. Our tour around the Greensboro Country Club's
Farm Course was a little shorter than expected due to the meeting coinciding
with the coldest and windiest day of April. However, we did get to see
some work being performed by Medalist Golf, the construction company doing
the renovation, and how they are building "Billy Bunkers" and
we inspected the new cracked sand that will be used as the bunker medium.
I would really like to thank our sponsors of the event: Growth Enhancer
and Southern Ag. Also, Labor Source provided a great lunch brought in
from Stamey's Barbecue and to everybody's surprise I had seconds!
Thank you everyone for your support this year and I look forward to seeing
you at the Annual Championship on May 18th.
