from 1965 to 2011
The
first meeting was held in October 1965 at Willow Creek Golf Course where
Tom Dawson was then Superintendent. This initial meeting was attended by
18 individuals, two-thirds of which were current golf course superintendents. The
name of this newly found organization was the North Carolina Superintendents
Association. This was later changed to The Piedmont Triad Turf Grass Association
and subsequently ended up being the close knit group we know today as
The Piedmont Golf Course Superintendents Association. The professionals
who formed this organization nearly 40 years ago became much closer as
a group through meetings and conversations they had resulting from their
affiliation as members.
Times have brought new and better technologies to our market, as well
as many new challenges to our profession. No matter when or how you are
involved with golf, everyone will agree that the job a Superintendent
has is vital to the life of any course as a business.
Today's golfing world seems to always desire the highest quality playing
conditions possible. To try and achieve those standards and meet golfer
expectations, Superintendents need all the support they can get. To the
PGCSA and all its members this can sometimes mean dues increases, membership
drives, and a constant quest for corporate sponsors.
Everyone needs to understand our Association is a nonprofit association
and 100% of the money raised through our association goes to items such
as: continuing education, providing an opportunity and platform for camaraderie
with fellow professionals, the image improvement of the Golf Course Superintendent,
member qualified scholarship programs, community support and continual
financial aid for ongoing turfgrass research.

As
we continue this endeavor into the future, remember your participation
does matter. We have given and will continue to give away
thousands of dollars for school expenses to our member's children because
they are part of our group. Financial aid has been given to people with
circumstances that are beyond their control. Industry related funding
for local Universities to continue with new and important research is
more important now than ever.
All
these services are ongoing and integral to the overall Vision and Mission
set forth by that small group of dedicated individuals who formed this
Association back in 1965.
